- W2101820691 abstract "Successful preservation of pancreas allografts needs to counteract the cellular damage accrued after brain death or circulatory arrest. Static cold storage being the simplest method, it has been the most widely used. The research team at the University of Wisconsin undertook systematic research in the 1980s to develop a fluid that was suitable for cold pancreas preservation for the whole organ. The result of this experimental design was an isotonic preservation fluid based on lactobionate and raffinose, with hydroxyethyl starch to provide further oncotic pressure: University of Wisconsin Solution. Its clinical introduction resulted in reduced complications, extended potential preservation time, and permitted the use of more extended criteria donors. Novel technologies are being developed to better assess the quality of the donor pancreas and improve preservation, either using hypothermic and/or normothermic perfusion to allow further extension of the donor pool, without compromising outcomes after solid pancreas or islet transplantation." @default.
