However, because the ear's sensitivity curve is not flat, a pure FM tone may stimulate the AM as well as the FM channels. We describe a titration method designed to uncover the properties of FM channels by cancelling the input to the AM channels. This method offers a way to study the properties of the FM channel in isolation, and to identify any crosstalk between the FM and AM channels. Titration measurements showed that thresholds for the FM channel can be appreciably different from thresholds for a pure FM tone. RESUME Afin d'expliquer les resultats psychophysiques qui montrent que le systeme auditif traite les changements d'amplitude (AM) independamment (du moins jusqu'a une premiere approximation) des changements de fre- quence (FM) il a ete suggere que le systeme auditif humain contient des sous-unites fonctionnelles (canaux) selectivement sensibles au AM et FM. Cependant a cause du fait que la courbe de sensibilite de I'oreille n'a pas une pente constante, un ton pur FM peut stimuler autant les canaux AM que FM. Nous decrivons dans cette etude une methode de desti- nee a mettre en evidence les proprietes des canaux FM en annulant I'input aux canaux AM. Cette methode permet d'etudier les proprietes du canal FM en isolation et d'identifier tout transfert d'information entre ces derniers et le canal AM. Des mesures de titrage demontrent que les seuils du canal FM peuvent etre fort differents des seuils d'un pur ton FM." @default.
