- W2102940369 abstract "Developments in new technologies, such as smartphones, are providing the consumer patient with increasing numbers of potential healthcare aids. Smartphone applications (Apps) for healthcare are designed to modify device functionality and provide large stores of health-related content. The lack of additional regulation, however, means that concerns about the validity and reliability of content are warranted. This study reviewed pain-related healthcare apps available to consumer patients, assessing functionality, content, and validity. A search was conducted through the official vendors of five major smartphone platforms: iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Nokia/Symbian, and Windows Mobile. The search employed generic and condition-specific pain search terms, and complete searches of the ‘Lifestyle/Health’ section where available. Included apps fulfilled the following criteria: 1) claimed provision of pain -relief, -management, or -information, 2) were aimed at the consumer patient, 3) were English language. Data were sourced from the app store descriptions. Extracted data related to descriptive characteristics, purpose, and content validity. 111 apps qualified for inclusion within the review. 79% were available through the iPhone. The target condition varied, ranging from generic aches and pain to condition-specific pain (e.g., arthritis); headache/migraine was the most commonly specified target. App content included multimedia information/education provision, diary tracking of pain variables, and relaxation techniques. Low levels of Healthcare Professional (HCP) involvement was reported in app development and content. Despite increasing numbers of apps being released, HCP involvement is not increasing. The number of pain-related smartphone apps aimed at patient consumers appears to be increasing. Although these apps may report a range of functionality, the majority offer information provision and there is a distinct lack of detail as to content source, validity, and reliability. Low HCP involvement is concerning given the lack of strict regulation for healthcare apps; consequently the consumer is potentially at risk from oversold market claims and inaccurate information." @default.
