- W2103086200 abstract "‘Oh, not another book by him, again.’ 1 Such was the critical reaction John Ashbery detected, in the early 1990s, to his most recent collections. The remark was made in an interview with David Herd, which headed a PN Review supplement, ‘Ashbery in Britain’, comprising in the main short commentaries on Ashbery's work. Having ordained Ashbery priest of the ‘anti-meaning orthodoxy’, Michael Hulse complained that the latest work appeared repetitive, leaving him with ‘the sense that we've read it all before’. 2 To dismiss the echoes of earlier words, the catches of the familiar, which haunt Ashbery's poetry, as the idle rehashing of a popular tune is to neglect the greater significance of these characteristic features. Their importance can be tied to an interest Ashbery has held throughout his career, one described in an earlier interview with John Murphy. Questioned about his interest in ‘the effects of time’, Ashbery acknowledged that ‘getting older is a thing I've been writing about all the time; though I didn't realise this before I began to get seriously older – I'm fifty-six now – and of course I never thought that I would’. 3 Now in his eightieth year, Ashbery has published his twenty-fourth collection. That which has been said or read before is revisited with renewed attention. There is much in A Worldly Country that will seem familiar to regular readers of Ashbery. But, for readers old or new, the collection offers a variety of gratifying returns." @default.
