- W2103103648 abstract "The design of a vehicle that operates and sustains operation at high altitudes is a focus of many researchers in support of military and humanitarian missions. A major obstacle in the realization of such a vehicle is its ability to capture and store enough energy to support a 24 hour cycle. Since the main energy source available to the vehicle is solar radiation, solar panels need to be carefully selected for weight and amount of power that can be delivered and will be maintained at the maximum power point using a power electronics converter. The cells will be maintained at the maximum power point so that during daylight hours the vehicle can capture enough energy to operate the vehicle, as well as store enough energy to sustain operation at night. The energy captured from the solar array will be used to drive the propeller motors and sustain the parasitic electronic devices of the vehicle (including the payload), while excess energy will be stored in the applicable energy storage devices or dissipated as heat to increase performance of other systems in the vehicle. The efficient monitoring and control of the energy flow will be handled by a bi-directional DC-DC power electronics converter that will be driven by a microcontroller or digital signal processor. This paper will present a near space vehicle design that will take into account the weight restrictions and operating environment of a vehicle that will sustain flight at high altitudes for long periods. Simulations and data supporting this design are also presented." @default.
