- W2103118765 abstract "This review aims to update the reader with the physiological background and current ideas on muscle fatigue. It defines the concepts of peripheral and central fatigue and indicates where failure in the neuromuscular command chain may occur. During high force contractions of single muscle groups for less than one minute, the loss of force is thought to be mainly due to peripheral factors. However, for the more complex patterns of muscular activity performed in everyday life, central factors are implicated as an important cause of fatigue. The possible causes of central fatigue are discussed for normal subjects, patients with exercise intolerance, and athletes. Changes in function of the neuromuscular junction, electrical activity of the muscle fibre and altered levels of muscle metabolites are discussed as peripheral causes of muscle fatigue. An outline of the varied clinical presentations of fatigue, together with brief guide lines for physiotherapy management, are included. Biography: Heather M Holder-Powell trained at Guy's Hospital School of Physiotherapy, qualifying in 1977. Since then she has worked in England and the USA, returning to Guy's in 1985 to complete the DipTP. In 1986–89 she taught at the School of Physiotherapy, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge and during this time obtained an MSc in human and applied physiology at King's College, University of London. In June 1989 she was appointed to her present post as senior lecturer in the physiotherapy section at the West London Institute of Higher Education. Dr David Jones is a physiologist with specific interests in muscle pathology, fatigue and training, and is currently a senior lecturer at the department of medicine, University College London." @default.
