- W2103143947 abstract "In 1941, Kingsley Dam was completed, on the North Platte River in western Nebraska, forming Lake McConaughy. At maximum pool, the length of the impoundment is 35 kilometers. This long, unimpeded stretch of open water, with an essentially west-to-east orientation, coincides with the direction of seasonally strong winds. As a result, the dam has experienced a large amount of wave action.The articulated concrete blocks, which formed the original slope protection on the upstream face of Kingsley Dam, succumbed to wave action in the first few years following reservoir filling. Their repair and subsequent replacement began what proved to be a long series of costly remedial measures to manage for waves on this large reservoir in the U.S. Great Plains. At a later date, armor units known as hexapods were placed on the dam. Lake McConaughy is the only known case where hexapods have been employed for slope protection on an inland water body.In May 1972, a combination of prolonged northwesterly winds and a seasonally high water level resulted in numerous wave-induced pockets on the upstream side of the dam. Since that incident and following extensive repairs, the irrigation district which owns and operates the reservoir has used a lower maximum pool elevation in its management procedures.This overview presents an accurate recounting of facts on the interaction of wind, water, and slope protection at Lake McConaughy over the past 40 years. Key physical parameters are reviewed. Also included is a discussion of management procedures and remedial measures taken to deal with the various situations as they have arisen." @default.
