- W2103207274 abstract "To improve the resistance of fish to Vibrio vulnificus, which is known to be an important agent of V. septicemia in humans, we studied the immune response in flounder after vaccination with V. vulnificus bacterins by the oral route. After intraperitoneal vaccination, a heat-killed bacterin of V. vulnificus induced a better antibody response than that induced by formalinised bacterin. In a comparison of the efficacies of oral vaccination between bacterins formulated by different methods, the uncoated heat-killed bacterin (UHKB) induced a better antibody response than that induced by enteric-coated heat-killed bacterin (ECHB) in flounder after vaccination twice a week for 4 weeks at a dose of 2 mg/fish expressed as dry weight of bacterin. Specific antibody-secreting cells (SASC) against V. vulnificus in the leukocytes isolated from the spleen of the flounder vaccinated orally with UHKB or ECHB were analyzed by a solid-phase immunoenzymatic (ELISPOT) assay, and were found to be maintained in similar numbers throughout the experimental period. However, a greater increase in the resistance of the flounder vaccinated with UHKB was evident from the faster elimination of a challenge dose of V. vulnificus both in vivo and in vitro compared with the rate shown by the flounder vaccinated with UHKB. These results suggested that oral vaccination of fish with V. vulnificus bacterin without a coating of acid-resistant film was a very effective method to prevent the infection of fish with V. vulnificus in the aquaculture industry and thereby prevent an outbreak of V. septicemia in humans." @default.
