- W2103644976 abstract "Computers have become the main tooi used in groundwater management. Computer software hasbeen developed for storage, processing and presentation of information on groundwater pollutionproblems. Continuing demands for more efficient handling of information have resulted inincreasing integration of the software into Decision Support Systems (DSSs). Both quantitative(numerical) and qualitative (knowledge) information are required to support decision-makingprocesses. To date, software development and integration were dedicated much more tonumerical information than to knowledge. However, without knowledge components DSSsremain integrated software systems, whereas they should be primarily regarded as integratedinformation systems. The DSS for Groundwater Pollution Assessment was conceptualised as an integrated informationsystem. It consists, basically, of a DSS kemel, an application environment and a knowledgecomponent. Design and development (and integration) of the knowledge component are the stepsof the knowledge encapsulation process that is much more than transformation of knowledge inelectronic form and its storage in the computer. The process begins with the definition of theproblem and also includes (equally important) acquisition, systematisation and formalisation ofknowledge. The case-specific nature and interdisciplinary character of groundwater problems arerecognised as the main obstacles to effective encapsulation of knowledge in the field ofgroundwater management. The knowledge component of the DSS for Groundwater Pollution Assessment is composed oftask-oriented Knowledge-Based Modules (KBMs). Content and design of KBMs are stronglydependent on the tasks that they support, but in principle, they provide information on operationsrequired for task accomplishment: which operations are required or recommended (e.g.acquisition, processing, presentation, etc), why, how to perform them and when. So far, threeKBMs have been designed and developed, namely: the Site Characterisation Module, theVulnerability Assessment Module and the Groundwater Modelling Module. Various forms ofknowledge representation, as offered by Artificial Intelligence, have been used in KBMsdevelopment. In addition, Case-Based Reasoning is anticipated as a promising approach toelectronic encapsulation and processing of knowledge. The booming development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) opens newfrontiers for knowledge encapsulation and DSS development in general. ICT techniques shouldbe used to improve cooperation between experts as individuals, and between various fields ofexpertise (e.g. hydrogeology, geochemistry, ecology, software engineering, etc). A sincerecooperation (teamwork in the real sense of the word) is equally crucial for establishment of abasic taxonomy of groundwater management tasks as for software integration; and for everythingin between." @default.
