- W2103697422 abstract "Ecology emerged only recently as a distinct science (Odum 1977) in academic institutions and in the professional marketplace. During the past decade, concerted efforts to apply ecological concepts to environmental assessment and natural resource management have increased significantly. We believe the destiny of our natural resources and the maintenance of environmental quality are dependent upon the inclusion of ecological principles in the decisionmaking process of society at large. Ecological concepts will not be included in environmental or natural resource planning unless ecologists compete successfully with environmental scientists and engineers for ecological positions in government, business, and industry, for this is where many of the important decisions take place. The objectives of this report are to assess manpower needs and availability in ecology and to examine the relevance of academic curricula to employment opportunities and requirements. Academic institutions are no longer the major employers of ecologists. The majority of career positions are in government, industry, and business. The research of ecologists who are employed in academia is supported primarily by grants and contracts with government agencies, industry, and business. Unless ecologists graduate from curricula that include problem-solving experiences, they will be at a distinct disadvantage when competing with environmental scientists and engineers for research support as well as for employment.
