- W2103717504 abstract "Because of the interrelationship between land use and health, the protection of the public health has long been one of the major objectives of land use planning in the United States. Initially, concern focused on the dwelling unit and urban neighborhood. As early as 1938, the American Public Health Association Committee on the Hygiene of Housing developed crite ria for the promotion of physical, mental, and social health in the dwelling, and in 1948 expanded its consideration to the neighborhood as a whole (11 , 12). Related land use planning concepts include (a) the control of urban densities to prevent contagion, insure adequate access to sunlight and air, protect against noise, and otherwise ensure a healthful environment, and (b) the design of neighborhoods to minimize hazards from traffic and ensure adequate access to various public facilities (10). With the explosion of suburban development following World War II, the cutting edge of land use planning practice shifted to metropolitan growth and development. Likewise, public health concerns in land use planning shifted from the home and neighborhood to the regional provision of adequate public facilities (e.g. water and sewerage) and to the creation of that were not only healthful but also satisfying places in which to live. Metropolitan planning agencies came into existence across the nation to provide some order to urban expansion (3), and the construc tion of entirely new communities was proposed to improve the quality" @default.
