- W2105016370 abstract "This study examines the effects of contingent visual stimulation on the acquisition and maintenance of a unilateral head-rotation response in 312-month old infants. During several traning sessions, the subjects were rewarded by variable patterned stimuli. The effectiveness of this contingency was assessed primarily by giving a subsequent extinction and reconditioning session to those infants who showed a reliable rate increase. In order to isolate the reinforcing effects of patterned stimulation from those of lightonset, an imageless stimulus was used as a response consequence during extinction. For some subjects, reinforcement was transferred to the contralateral head-turn to provide an additional test of the contingency. Both grouped and individual data disclosed reliable differentiation of the direction of head-turning as a function of the reinforcing contingencies during acquisition, extinction, and reconditioning. The results indicate that the opportunity to view heterogeneous visual patterns is reinforcing for infants. They also suggest that it is feasible to use conditioning procedures to determine visual preferences in infancy." @default.
