ABSTRACT: Self-esteem is one of the most complex psychological concepts an one of the most difficult ones to define, despite the fact that it is a factor that has always been present in any attempt to explain the normal and pathological human behavior. In order to describe adequately what self-esteem is we need to first look at some of the aspects that have contributed to the lack of precision of this concept. We need to make clear that self-concept and self-esteem are not interchangeable terms even though they are both in some way related, that self-esteem not a unitary factor but multidimensional, that self-esteem not only includes the most positive and valued aspects and limitations of the individual but it also includes less valued aspects and limitations of the individual and that, finally, self-esteem is not an unconditional self-assertiveness in de eyes of others but self-assertiveness respecting the individuality of others. You can define sel-esteem like the «positive or negative valuation that the individual makes of this self-concept. Such valuation goes together with feelings of self-acceptance and value». Self-esteem understood as described above influences and is expresed through the behavior of the individual in all her dimensions and manifestations such as self-acceptance, acceptance of others and interactions with others." @default.
