- W2105689384 abstract "No differences in the physiological prepartal decline of progesterone and the decline following ovariectomy in the last trimester of gestation were observed. It was further shown that a decrease of progesterone in the utero-ovarian vein seems to signal luteolysis several hours earlier than it can be seen from progesterone measurements in peripheral plasma. From both observations it was concluded that the decline of progesterone toward parturition is not only a function of luteolysis but also of a depletion of progesterone from body stores of fat, where up to 500 ng progesterone/gr tissue have been measured. As a result the correlation of progesterone in peripheral plasma with other endocrine changes, like the release of PGF, may be of no physiological significance. Abortion or fetectomy had no immediate influence on the concentrations of conj. estrone in peripheral plasma and the continuing slow decline seems to be correlated with placental deterioration since “in vitro” perifusion studies clearly indicated that the fetal cotyledon is the source of this hormone and that estrogen synthesis is apparently independent of precursors supplied by the fetus. These precursors most likely originate in the maternal compartment since “in vivo” placental perfusion from the maternal side changed steroid output on the fetal side but not vice versa. The large amounts of conj. estradiol-17a in the fetal compartment seem to result from a rapid reduction of estrone when released into the umbilical circulation. These data suggest that the concept of the feto-placental unit would not apply to the cow and that restrictions concerning other generalized theories have to be applied." @default.
