- W2106021044 abstract "This study tested two primary hypotheses. The first was that reported traffic offences, high sensation seeking scores, and two safety-related beliefs (self-rated law conformity, the belief that a skillful driver can bend the rules) would contribute to the tendency to report habitual driving violations (controlling for age, gender, and exposure). The second was that self-reported driving violations, along with various measures of cognitive error proneness (including habitual driving errors, lapses, and general cognitive failures) would contribute to accident likelihood (controlling for age, gender, and exposure). A convenience sample of 140 subjects (73 males and 67 females) aged between 19 and 60 years of age, completed the Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ), the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ), and the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS); as well as three self-report questions about beliefs associated with driving. The external and construct validity, and the internal reliability of these measures were examined. The internal reliability and construct validity of the AISS subscales (Novelty and Intensity) was not strongly supported. The distinction between two DBQ cognitive factors (Lapses and Errors) was also not upheld, however, the validity of distinguishing the DBQ cognitive factors from DBQ Violations was substantiated. Reported traffic offences and the safety-related beliefs, but not AISS Novelty or Intensity, made substantial contributions to predicting DBQ Violation scores (controlling for age and gender). It is suggested that the role of sensation seeking in the commission of violations may not have been adequately assessed in this study, due to errors of measurement inherent in the relatively new AISS scale. although the possibility of using 'near misses' as an alternative to statistically unlikely accidents was investigated, the measure appeared to reflect more of an attribution bias than accident liability, and was rejected. CFQ cognitive failures, and the extent to which drivers judged themselves to be error prone, made substantial contributions to predicting accident likelihood (controlling for age). It is suggested that the high loading of CFQ cognitive failures (in comparison to DBQ Errors and Lapses) may have been a consequence of social desirability bias, and the division of one general cognitive factor into two subscales. Although the effect size was small, this study supported the suggestion that drivers with inflexible attentional resources may be more likely than other road users to have vehicle crashes. Overall, this study supported efficacy of the Theory of Planned Behaviour to predict outcomes from beliefs, and highlighted its potential usefulness as an heuristic device to aid future road safety research." @default.
