- W2106259364 abstract "Aeroallergens play a major role in the pathogenesisof respiratory allergic diseases, particularly asthmaand rhinitis. Pollen, fungi, animal danders, housedust mites, domestic pets, and insects are ofparticular importance as triggering factors. Pollenare well studied as allergens among all otheraeroallergens and are important source of pollinosis.Respiratory allergy are prevalent among allpopulations all over the world. One can really thinkthe gravity of the situation by looking at theepidemiological data available across the globe(1-6). Epidemiological studies carried out in differentcountries report the prevalance of respiratory allergyfrom 15% to 30%. A survey conducted in Finlandshows a prevalance of around 14% allergic rhinitisand 2.5% asthma. In Australia 27% of children arereported to have wheeze. Asthma is prevalent inabout 9% Greek population. Recent surveyscarried out in India revealed 20 to 30% of thepopulation suffer from allergic rhinitis and 15%develop asthma. An epidemological study carriedout 30 years ago (1964) in Delhi had reportedonly 10% population having allergic rhinitis and 1%asthma. Thus it is well established that theincidence of allergy is increasing all around theworld.Knowledge about allergens has progressed rapidlyduring the last few decades with betterunderstanding of molecular mechanism of allergy.Structure and function of allergens have beenidentified. The knowledge of qualitative andquantitative prevalance and their seasonal andannual variataions is of paramount importance ineffective diagnosis and management of pollenrelated allergens. Several studies have providedexplanations about the relationship between allergicsensitization, allergen exposure and clinicalobservations such as allergic cross-reactions. Pollenallergens cross react strongly with other pollenallergens among the same family and allergensamong the pollen as well as foods. Reportsregarding the pollen associated food allergy are" @default.
