- W21064351 abstract "Oleic acid at definite stages of oxidation has a very toxic effect on haploid and diploid yeast cells. The effect of oxygen on the radiomimetic action of oxidized oleic acid was followed by giving a dose of 10,000to 100 000 r of Co/ sup 60/ gamma rays to haploid yeast cells (Zygosaccharomices bailii). Controls were unirradiated yeast cells to which no radiomimetic agent had been added, and also samples kept under a nitrogen atmosphere and in vacuum. The addition of non- oxidized oleic acid did not show any toxic effect. The toxic effect of the oleic acid peroxides was noticeably decreased by keeping the yeast cells under vacuum. A nitrogen atmosphere also decreased the toxic effect of the peroxides. Since a radiomimetic oxygen effect was detected, it is concluded that peroxides of fatty acids can be formed in the tissues of irradiated animals, and these toxic peroxides react with the biosubstrate to give symptoms of radiation sickness.
