- W2106910002 abstract "Use of vitamin/mineral supplement was studied in a random sample of 1019 adults from Central and Eastern Poland. Data was collected using oral interviews. Nutritional supplement intake was more frequent in women (55%) than in men (40%), and among subjects living in Warsaw (60%) and in small towns (48%) than from villages (36%). People with health problems (54%), subjects who took medicines (64%) and did not smoke (48%) were more likely to consume nutritional supplements than those who perceived their health as good (43%), did not take medicines (33%) and did not smoke cigarettes (39%). There were no differences between age and income groups. Most of the supplement users took vitamins and minerals together (42%) in accordance with physician prescription (47%). More than 50% of vitamin C and thiamine users took these vitamins in amounts which exceeded the Polish RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances) by at least 3 times and 25% of vitamins C, A and E users took doses 10 times higher than the RDA. The lowest doses taken by respondents for almost each mineral hardly exceeded zero. The median dose did not exceed 100% of RDA except selenium (125% RDA) and iron (187%)." @default.
