- W2108346743 abstract "This chapter examines the composition and structure of the O-specific polysaccharides (O-PS) or O-antigens) of the lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) of Gram-negative bacteria. Composition and structure of O-PSs are highly diverse. Based on the O-antigens, serologically distinct strains of the same bacterial species are classified into O-serogroups or O-serotypes. Numerous monosaccharides and nonsugar constituents have been identified as their components; some of them are widespread in nature, others are less common and some occur in O-PSs only. The occurrence of both monosaccharides and noncarbohydrate groups as O-specific polysaccharide components is surveyed in the chapter. Various types of these structures are considered, including homopolymers of a monosaccharide, homo- and hetero-polysaccharides built up of oligosaccharide repeats (O-units), and block copolymers. Structural features of regular O-specific polysaccharides and factors that mask their regularity are described. Emphasis is placed on the occurrence and the role of nonrepetitive domains that are present at the reducing and nonreducing ends of some O-chains. N-repetitive motifs in O-PSs result either from post-polymerization modifications or, in the case of ABC transporter-dependent synthesis pathway, from different initiation and termination steps of biosynthesis. For instance, an addition of an O-methylated sugar or a different monosaccharide to the nonreducing end appears to be a signal for the cessation of the O-PS chain, which allows termination of the O-chain at a specific sugar residue rather than at any residue." @default.
