- W2108486281 abstract "The specialized receptors of the vestibular apparatus provide the animal with information about its motion and its orientation with respect to the gravitational vertical. By evolutionary processes the dynamic responses of this end-organ subserving equilibratory function have been optimized for the environment in which the animal lives (Mayne, 1965). But man has developed mechanical aids to locomotion which expose him to linear and angular accelerations differing in magnitude and time course from those for which the end-organ and its central integrative mechanisms are functionally adapted. Thus, when he is exposed to such unnatural force environments the vestibular apparatus may generate signals which are no longer appropriate to the motion of the vehicle; illusory sensations and inappropriate vestibular reflexes serve to disorientate the operator and degrade his control." @default.
