- W2108649110 abstract "Serum hepatitis (S.H.) in addicts is Summary extremely common in Harlem Hospital, New York, but post-transfusion hepatitis is rare, despite the fact that most blood units were purchased from commercial sources. Sixteen patients who had received a unit of blood containing S.H.-related SH/Auantigen (Ouchterlony technique) were followed up— two for 4 and 5 months, the others for 6 months. No patient had jaundice. One patient was persistently S.H. positive by Ouchterlony, but could have been a previous carrier; one became positive briefly at 6 months; and a third patient was transiently positive for antigen by immunoelectrophoretic technique (and on Ouchterlony with concentrated serum) only. Four patients had brief elevations of serum-glutamic-pyruvic-transaminase of greater than 90 units. The frequency of clinically apparent hepatitis differed strikingly from the results of other studies. This suggests that this population differs in susceptibilities from the others studied, in part, because of socio-economic differences in the frequency of S.H. transmission in this city. This would better explain the S.H. rate of 1.2% in commercial blood, as compared to 0.1% in volunteer blood, than, as previously supposed, the frequency of addicts selling their blood to such sources." @default.
