- W2108687553 abstract "While both radiofrequency (RF) and laser (L) endovenous thermal ablation are accepted treatments for the refluxing Greater Saphenous Vein in symptomatic patients, neither technology has been definitively proved to have fewer complications or superior results in a direct prospective comparison. The aim of this study is to definitively compare the two modalities in terms of technical success, major complications (DVT), and patient satisfaction parameters. A specific protocol was approved by the IRB and all new patients at our outpatient vein center who fit specific inclusion criteria were randomized into the “L Group” or the “RF Group” and underwent the procedure in a blinded fashion. Patients were seen at 1 week, 6 weeks, and 6 months at which times sonograms and data regarding patient satisfaction were obtained. Primary data points were technical success (postive if the GSV remained closed with no neovascularity), absence of DVT, and patient satisfaction parameters including pain (subjective) and bruising (subjective and objective). Sixty-six patients were randomized into the L group and 63 into the RF group. At 1 week, there was 100% closure with no DVT in both groups but a significant (p<0.0019) increase in pain and bruising in the L group. At six weeks, there was one technical failure in each group and no DVT or significant difference in patient satisfaction. Forty of the 66 in the laser group (61%) and 37 of the sixty-three (59%) in the RF group were followed to date at six months of which there was one additional failure in the laser group and no DVT in either group. There was no significant difference in patient satisfaction parameters at 6 months. The modalities are statistically equivalent in terms of high technical success rates, low major complications (DVT), and patient satisfaction at 6 weeks and 6 months. There is significantly higher post-procedure pain and bruising in the immediate post-procedure interval in patients who underwent the L procedure. The study is ongoing." @default.
