- W2109190708 abstract "clL43iiiADVISORY COMMITTEEFOR AERONAUTICSRESEARCHMEMORANDUMPRELIMINARYINVESTIGATIONOF REFLECTIONS OFOBLIC$JEWAVES FROM A POROUS WALLBy Don D. Davis, Jr., and GeorgeP. WoodSUMMARYA porous wall was used in an attempt to eliminatereflections ofobliquewaves from a tunnelwall. Calculationswere made of the requiredresistancecharacteristicsof a wall in order that the flow through thewall, due to the pressure differenceacross a shock wave, would equalthe componentnormal to the wall of the flowbehind the shockwave. Theresistancecharacteristicof a sinteredbronze wall was measured and thereflectionsof waves impingingon the wall were observed at a Mach numberof 1.62. The.intensityof the reflectionswas greatlyreducedby per-mitting flow throughthe wall.INTRODUCTIONTwo of the well-known difficultiesencountered in wind-tunneltesting at trsnsonic speeds are: first, the necessity of changingnozzles in order to change the test-sectionMach number fromhigh-subsonicto low-supersonicspeeds and of using a differentnozzle foreach differentsupersonicMach number,.and second, the necessity ofusing a model that is small enough, compared to the size of the testsection, so that wall-interferenceeffects are negligibly small. In ameffort to alleviatethese difficulties, the slotted-walltunnelhasbeen proposed. As presently developed, the slotted-walltunnelhasbeen shown to give results that are in fair agreement through thetransonicrange up to a Mach number of 1.08 with the free-air flowaround a nonliftingbody that is relatively large compared to the sizeof the body that can be tested in a tunnelwith solid walls (ref.1).At Mach numbershigher than 1.08, there are local disturbancesin thepressure distributionon the model that are believed to be due toreflectionsof the model bow wave from the slotted wall. One of the well-known difficultiesin testing at supersonicspeedsis that causedby reflectionsof shockwaves from the tunnelwalls." @default.
