- W2109786385 abstract "The equipment which forms the subject of this paper has been developed as an accessory unit to work in conjunction with existing generators primarily to enable them to give short exposures at a high repetition rate for cineradiography and similar applications, although longer exposures can also be controlled if required. The problem of making very short exposures accurately and reliably, possibly in rapid succession, is well known. Considering a conventional fourvalve generator operating from 50 cycle mains, the shortest practicable duration is one half cycle, i.e. 0·01 second or 10 milliseconds. Since the instantaneous voltage applied to the tube is varying throughout the half cycle and is only high enough to be effective in producing radiation for part of the period, this minimum exposure is sometimes quoted as a rather shorter interval such as 0·006 second. Even this relatively long exposure demands the use of special contactors in the primary circuit or gas discharge devices of the ignitron type, if consistent results are to be obtained. Owing to the necessity for rapidly moving, lightweight parts, mechanical contactors require careful maintenance, whilst gas discharge devices are expensive not only in themselves, but also on account of the auxiliary components required. The problems are eased somewhat by the use of a three-phase supply in conjunction with ignitrons, but the timing is still necessarily related to the supply frequency, and the basic three-phase generator is more complicated and expensive than a single-phase one." @default.
