- W211036168 abstract "This chapter discusses the problems involved in the development of an in vivo monitoring system. The overall metabolic status of an individual is assessed by taking a series of sequentially timed samples, which then have to be processed and analyzed at a later time. If one is assessing the function of a particular organ, on the other hand, one requires a series of both venous and arterial samples. However, the acquiring of synchronous samples is not always easy. These considerations make continuous in vivo monitoring of particular interest in the study of normal metabolism and of metabolic disorders. In vivo monitoring of metabolites in man is in its infancy. However, systems incorporating immobilized enzymes make this type of system a practical and economic possibility. The majority of work done in the field of in vivo monitoring of metabolites has used the continuous–flow analyzer system of Technicon. Many of the methods developed for in vivo monitoring are concerned with the single measurement of glucose in the treatment of diabetes." @default.
