- W211055642 abstract "Guidelines, June/July, 1980 NEW TPGA SECRETARY HIRED Charlotte R. McKay has been hired as the new TPGA Staff Secretary, replacing Dessie Lee Honeycutt who resigned on April 1, 1980. Charlotte was born and grew up in Georgia, but for the past 18 years she has traveled and lived in a variety of locations as assignments of her husband, Air Force Colonel John McKay, dictated. Charlotte and John have two children, David (16) and Holly (14). Besides spending a number of enjoyable years in the central Texas area, Charlotte particularly enjoyed their four year tour in Tokyo, Japan. Charlotte has served in many volunteer and elected positions with the Red Cross and Air Forces Officers Wives Clubs. She is also a past president of the Bergstrom AFB Ladies Golf Association. For the past year and a half Charlotte has been an executive secretary to a charter airline based in Austin. Welcome aboard, Charlotte! We're glad to have you with us. Memories of Charlotte McKay and TCA By Bonnie Pierson Walking into Suite 402 the other day I stopped to assimilate all the sights and sounds of an office active in its daily routine--four people working at state of the art computers, pulling information off the fax machine, opening a stack of mail, answering incessantly ringing telephones, and watching the early morning workings of the Texas Legislature on TV. Looking around the six rooms that comprise the offices of the Texas Counseling Association (TCA), I saw a bright, beautifully furnished work space filled with mementos that depict the growth of the Association over the past twenty years. Lost in my own little review, I wondered about the that had brought all this together and remembered that interviewing this common denominator was the reason for my visit. Charlotte McKay, Executive Director and mainstay of TCA throughout three name changes and twenty presidents, had announced her retirement, and I had been asked to write an article about her for the Journal. Looking around at the now of TCA, I thought back to the spring of 1980 when the Texas Personnel and Guidance Association (TPGA) was without an executive secretary, and I was walking again into the original TCA offices and remembering the smell of stale air that accumulates in unused spaces. Two rooms were furnished in early office basics-- desks with a fine layer of dust covering their tops, an old black telephone, and a relatively new IBM Selective typewriter. Charlotte had submitted a resume for the executive secretary position and while Lea Cleveland, President of TPGA, and 1, the President-Elect, were waiting for her to appear for a job interview, we discussed the qualities we were searching for in a candidate for executive secretary and the duties and responsibilities that person would assume. The time for the interview arrived and in walked this tall, attractive woman with a warm smile. She said, Hello, I'm Charlotte McKay. Over the next hour or so of the interview, it became clear that this woman possessed the intelligence, style, charm, and sense of humor necessary for interacting with the various personalities of the Association. As we talked about her past and most recent volunteer experiences, she was able to translate these experiences into real work situations. By the end of that interview, we knew we had a fit. That is how Charlotte McKay came to the Executive Director job initially. However, as I entered the office suite of the 1990s, the essence of my quest was to answer the question, -How did she and TCA_ come to the Place-they are -now? I asked Charlotte about early recollections of her position. She, too, remembered the differences that existed then, and stated that one of her main functions was to go through the mail each day ferreting out the junk mail from what needed to be passed on to the President for action. The phone did not ring very often then and generally there was not a lot to do since most of the finances had not been turned over to the Austin office. …" @default.
