- W2111036248 abstract "This paper discusses a chip that was designed to show how well different power-saving techniques work. The video, which played on a tiny display mounted on the chip's motherboard, showed faint wisps of smoke coming from the package as the device coughed into life for the first time. The chip came from the fab in full working order but a problem with the packaging meant performing a quick repair, which allowed the chip to boot up. The smoke came from the residue left by the fix rather than overactive transistors. It quickly dissipated. What the video did not show was what was happening on the chip that was playing it back. The processor was producing full-motion video with no jerks, stops or judders. Yet, in between each frame, the processor put itself to sleep in an attempt to save power. It was just one example of the intense focus that system-on-chip (SoC) designers now have to put on power - saving it wherever possible - to stop them leaching away the charge in a battery before the device does anything useful. The chip itself was the latest in a series of designs ARM has put together with tools supplier Synopsys to investigate different aspects of circuit design and system architecture." @default.
