- W2111755394 abstract "A long term field experiment was initiated during 1971-72 to evaluate the effect of poor quality sub soil water singly and in combination with canal water on various crops in a clay loam soil at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, Pakistan. In this study, four water qualities of irrigation (with total soluble salt concentration) viz., canal water (175 mg kg-1), tubewell water (2700mg kg-1), mixture-I (1000mg kg-1) and mixture-II (2000mg kg-1), the latter two qualities prepared by mixing in 2:1 and 1:2 ratios the canal and tubewell waters, respectively, and four field crops namely wheat, kharif fodder, berseem, and cotton sown in the same sequence of cropping year after year were involved. Irrigations were used according to the consumptive use of the respective crops with additional amounts for leaching fractions, their amounts relating to the salinity of the respective waters. The determinations of consumptive use were made from the moisture depletions estimated gravimetrically throughout the crop growing period in the plots irrigated with canal water without any leaching fractions (LF).During the first six year period, eleven crops were grown and in the matter of the first three years the yield of sensitive crops, berseem and kharif fodder were very seriously affected while by 1976-77 it was not any more economical to grow these because the depression in their yields were over 60%, however, the comparatively tolerant crops, namely wheat and cotton, showed only moderate reductions in yields and that only under the more saline water regimes, mixture II (2000 mg kg-1) and tubewell waters. In 1977, various soil amendments such as gypsum alone and along with farm yard manure, sulphur, sulphuric acid and others were applied in the soil and study was continued up to 1986-87. The amendments resulted in great improvement and as expected, it was more pronounced in more affected plots treated with waters of higher salinity and the yields of sensitive crops were enhanced highly significantly. The yields of tolerant crops i.e., wheat and cotton were also improved to some extent. It has been especially noted that the rainfall when received in quantities above normal (300mm) resulted in very conspicuous improvement in the soil conditions and mitigation of added salinity from poor quality irrigation waters.Key wordssaline water irrigationkharif fodderberseemcottonwheat" @default.
