- W2111915511 abstract "Although metals are not metabolized in a similar manner to organic compounds, they are constantly converted to different ionic forms and also transferred to various ligands intracellularly. Metals are involved in various metabolic reactions as constituents of metalloenzymes or as cofactors and are important cellular factors for synthesis of nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates. Nutritional studies have shown that these essential metals themselves can interact with each other and can cause deficiency symptoms of one in the presence of an excess of certain others (ERshoff 1948; POrter et al. 1977). In addition to essential metals, we are constantly exposed to various nonessential metals in our diet, air, and water. In certain cases, exposure to toxic metals occurs at the workplace or in the treatment of diseases along with environmental exposure. Several toxic metals are closely related to essential metals in their chemistry and they can interact either directly or through their binding to various cellular components. These interactions play a major role in the nutrition and toxicology of metals. These interactions can result in changes in absorption, disposition, retention, excretion, and toxicity of metals (FRieden 1976). This review will deal with one such interaction, namely the role of metallothionein (MT) in the nutrition and toxicology of metals." @default.
