- W2112038186 abstract "Tilapia are one of the most important species in commercial aquaculture world wide. On the one hand this is due to their ability to utilize a broad variety of food sources. On the other hand tilapia show a high resistance towards poor water conditions and handling stress. The white filets have a very good texture and a delicious taste. Hence, the demand for tilapia is steadily increasing especially in the USA and Europe.As mixed-sex tilapia stocks are mainly farmed in extensive systems their high fecundity and reproduction rate results in overcrowding in the ponds. Therefore all-male stocks are highly desirable. Previous investigations in this species showed a strong influence of temperature on sex determination with an underlying genetic basis. Thus, losses in productivity due to stunting of mixed sex Nile Tilapia stocks could be alleviated by production of temperature sensitive lines to sustainably increase the proportion of males by temperature treatment. A two generation selection experiment was conducted starting with 36 families of Oreochromis niloticus from Lake Manzala (Egypt) as base population. The families were screened for their thermal sensitivity in the following way. After a 9 day incubation period at 28°C, fry were subdivided into a control (28°C) and a treatment group, each containing 110 fish. The treatment group was kept at a temperature of 36°C for 10 days. Thereafter treated fry were gradually adapted to 28°C again. Each treatment and corresponding control group was raised separately till sexing. The percentage of males in treatment groups was the selection criteria and the families showing the greatest surplus in their sex ratios compared to their corresponding control groups were selected. Starting with a basepopulation of 36 Manzala strain fullsib families temperature sensitive and non-sensitive lines were developed. The results clearly indicated selection for temperature dependent sex determination is possible. After on generation of upwards selection a male percentage of 83.7% was obtained. After second selection it further augmented to 90.2% males. In contrast downwards selection showed a weak response to selection after first selection. Showing a decrease in the male percentage to 65.2%. Second selection lead to a high response to selection showing a reduction in male percentage of 11.2% to 54%. Due to the fact that no correlated response to selection was observed in the control groups, it is argued that temperature sex determination and genetic sex determination can be described as two distinct traits not being genetically correlated.The results obtained showed that selecting for temperature dependent sex ratios is a feasible approach to redundantise hormone feeding to sexually undifferentiated fry. A high response to selection and a realised heritability of 0.69, clearly demonstrated that temperature sex determination has a highly heritable genetic background. Regarding the high response to selection and realized heritability the action of few major genes causing the bulk of additive variation and minor genes causing the remaining additive variance seem to be responsible for expression of temperature sex determination in Nile Tilapia. Thus, the results obtained showed that it is realistic to obtain a male proportion exceeding 95%, which is necessary to effectively avoid stunting, by means of selection for temperature dependent sex determination.In contrast, prolongation of temperature treatment to 30 days was not able to induce temperature sex reversal in crosses and meiotic gynogenetic offspring of genetic female homozygous isogenic lines. The present study revealed contradictory results regarding sex ratios obtained from such genotypes in earlier investigations.
