- W2112711633 abstract "In the interesting article by R Lin and RK Maloney (Am J Ophthalmol 127:129–136, January 1999), they confirm earlier reports that flap-related complications after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) occur in 5.0% to 8.7% of cases and decrease with the experience of the surgeons. Complications not considered in these reports include asymptomatic epithelial ingrowth and flap microstriae that may result in decreased vision quality. This complication rate appears to be relatively high for a procedure performed largely in eyes with 20/20 vision. A recent study reported 26 patients with −2.0 diopters to −5.5 diopters of myopia, who were randomized to receive LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in the two eyes. 2 El Maghraby A. Salah T. Waring III, G.O. Klyce S. Ibrahim O. Randomized bilateral comparison of excimer laser in situ keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy for 2.50 to 8.00 diopters of myopia. Ophthalmology. 1999; 106: 447-457 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (174) Google Scholar One-year data in 24 patients revealed no major differences in refractive outcome, induced astigmatism, predictability, stability, best-corrected visual acuity, and topographic stability in the two eyes. Flap-related complications occurred in one (3.8%) of the LASIK eyes. All eyes attained 20/40 or greater uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), and 20/20 or greater UCVA was present in 62.5% PRK and 79.2% of LASIK eyes. No major difference in patient satisfaction existed, however, in the two eyes at 1 year after surgery. Another study in 33 patients with −2.5 diopters to −8.0 diopters of myopia reported similar results. 1999; 106: 447-457 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (174) Google Scholar Flap-related complications in this study occurred in two (6.1%) eyes. Two years after surgery, although LASIK resulted in a higher percentage of eyes with 20/20 or greater UCVA, the difference was not major, and patient satisfaction with the two procedures was similar." @default.
