- W2113086757 abstract "Since the 1 970s Islamist movements have emerged as major forces of opposition in a number of countries in the Middle East. This article seeks to explore how these movements have come to represent and symbolize opposition to unpopular regimes and to mobilize both active and symbolic support on the part of large segments of the population in these countries. In paying attention to questions of mobilization and protest, the analysis brings to focus the terms in which Islamist movements could be viewed as social movements while also rethinking some aspects of social movement theory. In doing so, the article aims to widen the scope of investigation in existing approaches to Islamist movements. Towards this goal the article proceeds by making two analytical moves. One, it turns away from explanations that privilege the role of ideology understood, conceptually, as fixed ideas and beliefs as a key mobilizing factor, while acknowledging the importance of ideological discourses in shaping identity frames and giving orientation to action. As will be elaborated below, this understanding of ideology not only avoids essentialist representations of culture and religion, but also underlines the sociality of language and the dynamism of all systems of meaning, including those anchored in religious and cultural traditions.
