- W2113191332 abstract "Food insecurity (FI) is detrimental for children in several developmental domains, but there are almost no empirical data explaining why and how this occurs. Alternations in child daily activities may be an important mechanism linking child FI with its developmental consequences. We aimed to investigate the association of child FI with three sets of outcomes: participation in daily activities, schooling, and stunting in children, and to compare the associations of child and mother reports of FI with these outcomes. We collected cross-sectional data from 131 mother-child pairs in Miranda State, Venezuela on FI, daily activities, schooling, and anthropometric measurements. FI items reported by mothers and children were used to create one mother and two child scales, each with reliability of 0.74. FI reported by children was significantly associated with higher work activities (i.e., raising food crops, food shopping, doing home passive chores, cooking at home, and taking care of siblings), greater television watching and napping, and higher rates of school absenteeism and stunting. In contrast, FI reported by mothers was not associated with any of the child outcomes. These findings demonstrate that child experiences of and responses to FI alter daily activities in ways that are likely detrimental to their development, interfere with schooling, and place children at nutritional risk as exhibited by stunting." @default.
