- W2113286579 abstract "Previously unreported or unconfirmed overtone and combination bands assignable to amide group vibrational modes in the near-infrared spectra of several simple primary and secondary amides have been elucidated. Three bands in the 7000-6700 cm−1 region of three primary amides examined are attributed to 2va, va + vs, and 2vs modes, respectively, of the -NH2 group, while bands involving combinations of va and vs each with amide II and amide III are identified in the region 5100-4700 cm−1. The identification of the 2vNH overtone band and of the (vNH + amide II) and (vNH+ amide III) combination bands in the near-infrared spectra of five secondary amides are also corroborated. Establishment of assignments was aided by deuteration and solvent studies. In this way, a (2vCO + amide III) combination band for the primary amides was deduced and was confirmed for the secondary amides, thus accounting for all of the absorptions observed in the 7000-4550 cm−1 region of the spectra. Anharmonicity constants for the N-H stretching modes were found to be of the same magnitude as those for primary and secondary amines. Based on Beer's law studies, the near-infrared bands appear to be potentially useful for quantitating the amides." @default.
