- W2113459427 abstract "The influence of breastfeeding on weight gain in the 1st 6 months of life was analyzed in a study of 365 children born in 1975-78 in the agro-industrial community of Pradopolis Brazil. The infants all of whom weighed more than 2500 gm at birth were classified into 5 groups: Group A weaned at 0-2 months; Group B weaned at 2-4 months; Group C weaned at 4-6 months; Group D exclusively breastfed up to 6 months; and Group M mixed feeding in the 6th month. Observation of the growth curves of each group suggested that the velocity of weight gain is not directly associated with breastfeeding duration. Weight at birth had a stronger influence on growth than breastfeeding pattern. However Groups C and D involving the infants who were breastfed the longest registered the greatest weight gains overall. Since these were also the infants with the highest birthweights it can be speculated that there is a pattern in which well nourished mothers give birth to higher birthweight children who in turn are able to suckle more efficiently consequently enabling the mother to produce more milk. Also observed was a spurt in weight gain in the 1st 2 months after birth interpreted as a catch up growth that overcomes limitations imposed by uterine size." @default.
