- W2113648522 abstract "Since the pioneering papers of Blois [I], Smith [2], and Olson and Pohm [3] more than a decade ago, a tremendous amount of effort and talent has been spent, all over the world, on t,rying to understand the physical behavior of magnetic films and t,heir implementation as computer memory elements. This, however, seemed justified, as the switching speed of magnetic films was found to be so much higher than that of ferrite cores, that considerable improvement in memory cycle time could be expected. Today the physicist can look back on a large number of very interesting investigations with respect to magnetic films, whereas the applications engineer has reason to be less satisfied. Although nowadays a of companies manufacture computers containing thin magnetic film stores, the expected total transition from ferrite cores to thin magnetic films has not yet occurred, and possibly never will occur in view of the appearance on the scene of a new rival: the monolithic semiconductor memory. Because of this situation, it is justified to ask whether there is any possible application for thin magnetic films other than fast computer memories, especially in view of the profound knowledge already gained on this subject. Papers on such other applications appear only sporadically in the literature, therefore it is the purpose of this paper to give a critical review of these possibilities and to relate them to the characteristic propert, ies of thin magnetic films." @default.
