- W2114987988 abstract "Performance on word-list learning tests often show a serial position effect: examinees tend to recall words from the beginning (primacy effect) and from the end of the list (recency effect) over words from the middle region. This effect has been interpreted as evidence of short-term memory process. The order in which words are retrieved has received little attention and could be indicative of different storage processes. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relation between the retrieval order of words from the recency region in learning trials and performance on the delayed free recall task in normal elderly subjects and in patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT). Eighty-nine DAT patients and 49 normal subjects were administered a word-list learning task consisting of 12 words read aloud for 3 consecutive trials, each trial followed by a free-recall test, and a 20-minute delayed free-recall . The method for scoring responses took into a * ccount the order in which words from the recency region were recalled. This score was then compared with performance on delayed free-recall. Results of DAT patients revealed that if a word was consistently retrieved in 4th place or above in all 3 learning trials it had significant greater possibility to be recalled in the delayed trial than if it was consistently retrieved in 1st -3rd place. In normal elderly subjects these differences were much attenuated. The possible meaning of these findings are discussed, relating them to short-term and long-term storage and characteristics of memory impairment in DAT." @default.
