- W2115185515 abstract "The main purpose of this study is to determine the effects of Basic Counseling Skills Training on counselors' empathic skill levels. Empathic skill is a teachable skill, can be enhanced through education. It is a basic skill for counselors which they should be expected to internalize. Although counselor trainees get educated through counseling skills and empathic skill during their graduate education, afterwards if they don't internalize or use them, these skills won't be a part of their behavioral patterns, will become blunt as well. Accordingly, the education investigated throughout this research was planned and implemented within the scope of the Ministry of Education Inservice Training Courses in order to provide an opportunity for counselors to update their knowledges and internalize these skills. The research was conducted with 90 counselors, in which 48 counselors constituted the experimental group and 42 counselors constituted the control group. The pre test-post test experimental model with control group was used in the research. The data were gathered by using Empathic Skill Scale which was developed by Dokmen (1988) and a questionnaire. To analyze the data, t test and the repeated measures of ANOVA were used. It was found that, there is a statistically significant increase in empathic skill levels of counselors after training. This means that, Basic Counseling Skills Training was effective in increasing empathic skill levels of counselors. This result asserts the notion that counselors should be trained by inservice educations. Moreover,it is suggested that besides the application of core counseling skills, current approaches and their applications should be presented under supervision through inservice trainings." @default.
