- W2115865736 abstract "I just read Dr. Alpert’s editorial in the August issue of The American Journal of Medicine. As a skeptic of global warming, how do you explain the noncontroversial finding of the melting polar ice caps? I have been unable to find a single climatologist who can offer an explanation other than global warming. In fact, the science of climatology has melting polar ice caps as a sine qua non for global warming.1Alpert J.S. If, as you recommend, we maintain a skeptical attitude then the corollary to that must be the addressing of the original articles and not the opinion of a science fiction writer, who for all we know, hasn’t read the original articles or has read only the pseudo-science. The ReplyThe American Journal of MedicineVol. 119Issue 4PreviewI do not question that global warming is a fact. I was just unsettled (as a lay person in this area) by the idea that global warming may not be the result of human intervention or that the human greenhouse effect may be less than we think. Because we know that there have been regular periods of global warming and cooling in the past, I wonder how much of the current warming trend is caused by humans and how much is the result of regular cycles of cooling and warming. I honestly do not know the answer, but I do know that a minority of scientists think that the human factor may be less than that which the majority of scientists espouse. Full-Text PDF" @default.
