- W2115868927 abstract "The decay time for a thermal disturbance in carbon dioxide due to radiative transfer is important in studies of the behavior of the atmopsheres of Mars and Venus. This process involves both radiative heat transport and collisional exchange of energy between kinetic motion and the vibrational modes associated with the radiation. At pressures on the order of one atmosphere the latter mechanism functions quite rapidly, so that in the absence of dynamic transport of heat, vibrational and non-vibrational energies are maintained essentially in equilibrium, and radiative relaxation can be isolated for study; by introducing rapidly varying thermal fluctuations, as in ultrasonic waves, radiation is made ineffective, and the collisional mechanism of vibrational relaxation can be observed. At lower pressures, and correspondingly less frequent collisions, the mechanisms of vibrational relaxation and radiative decay interact. A mathematical description of the temporal behavior of kinetic and vibrational energy under the influence of arbitrary sources as well as radiative transfer is used to derive a radiative decay time for thermal disturbances in carbon dioxide that is applicable to all pressures." @default.
