- W2116103685 abstract "We used the giant discoid Red Sea foraminifer (“foram”), Amphisorus hemprichii as a model system to study the development and maintenance of traction forces in foram pseudopodial networks (i.e.,reticulopodia). Amphisorus extends pseudopodia radially from the margins of its shell. When plated on a flexible rubber substrate, wrinkles develop where pseudopodia initially contact the substrate and pull against it. Numerous microtubules extend throughout the networks, whereas F-actin-containing plaques are only seen along the ventral surface of the pseudopodia, in regions in close contact with the substrate. Pseudopodial tension was relieved by severing the pseudopodia with a glass needle or by treating the networks with colchicine or cytochalasin B. Together with earlier observations these findings suggest that microtubules and microfilaments interact to generate tensile forces within the pseudopodia; these forces may be used for cell attachment or locomotion." @default.
