- W2116243583 abstract "The orthodontic appliance is the clinician's primary tool for initiating andsustaining the biological processes that control tooth movement. This is achieved by applying a force system that displaces a tooth, or segment of teeth, causing stresses in the periodontal ligament which produce physical, chemical, and electrical signals that are sent to the surrounding cells and tissues. Both the quantity and quality of tooth displacement can be altered by varying the magnitude and direction of the moments and forces applied mechanically to the teeth. Understanding the relationship between appliance activation and the resultant stresses produced at the level of the periodontal ligament is the first step toward understanding the biological mechanisms that allow clinicians to move teeth predictably." @default.
