Abstract Here we identify anthropogenic and natural processes that are eroding the El Morrillo archaeological site, localized in the bay of Matanzas, Matanzas city, Cuba. We base our conclusions on our study of the area’s satellite images taken during the last decade and historic documentation that span further back to three centuries. Through this generalized study, we show a considerable and systematic loss of archaeological evidence due to cover vegetation and sediment disturbance of both cultural and natural origins. We have found that the historically extensive use of the land for agriculture, and more recently for the construction of a military training range have caused a loss of protective vegetation that is facilitating soil erosion in the area. This site of El Morrillo is within one of the oldest and most important archaeological districts in Cuba. A more detailed study of its deposits promises to expand and deepen the understanding of Matanzas’s Amerindian and colonization history." @default.
