- W2116475120 abstract "TGF-β1 belongs to a family of cytokines that includes five members (TGF-β1 through TGF-β5). They are 25 kD peptides that form a homodimer and control a vast array of biological functions, such as differentiation, adhesion, migration, proliferation, and production of extracellular matrix in different cell types [1]. In vitro, TGF-β1 has demonstrated diverse effects on cell differentiation and proliferation, depending on the cell type and experimental conditions. The diversity of the effects of TGF-β1 points to the multiple mechanisms by which this growth factor peptide exerts its impact. The cellular mechanisms of actions of TGF-β1 are mediated through cell surface receptor molecules [2]. Three types of receptors have been identified: types I, II, and III. These receptors are the products of distinct genes. It has been postulated that the type III receptor with a short cytoplasmic domain is not involved in the major effects or TGF-β1 [3]. However, type I and II receptors are necessary for all TGF-β1-induced signaling [4–6]. These receptors have serine/threonine kinase activity, and TGF-β1-induced signaling most likely involves protein phosphorylation [4–6]. However, specific substrates for the action of these receptors have not yet been fully identified." @default.
