- W2116680225 abstract "The need for measuring radioactivity in inaccessible locations, such as the heart and great vessels and the gastrointestinal tract, could in principle be met by a scintillation crystal on the end of a sufficiently long and flexible light “pipe” which would deliver light pulses to the face of a photomultiplier tube. The development of fiber optics light pipes by Kapany (1, 2) and their commercial availability appear to have made possible the attainment of this goal. An anthracene crystal, coated with Lucite, 1/8 inch in diameter and 3/16 inch long (obtained from Harshaw Chemical Co., Cleveland, Ohio), was coupled with Dow-Corning 200 fluid to the end of a flexible light guide 1/8 inch in diameter and 48 inches long, sheathed in polyvinyl chloride tubing (obtained from American Optical Co., Southbridge, Mass.). The crystal was coated with a reflective “paint” of “Duco” cement and MgO, and the assembly was painted with a number of coats of black Tygon paint to produce a physical bond as well as to exclude light not originating within the crystal. It seemed necessary to use a special low-noise phototube (EMI 9536), chilled with dry ice, in order to obtain adequate signal-to-noise ratio. The pulses were led to a linear amplifier, pulse-height analyzer, and scaler. An attempt was made to adjust the coating on the crystal assembly to exclude light but not to interfere too seriously with beta rays from I131. Upon immersion of the crystal in an I131 solution in a 100-ml. volumetric flask, a net count rate of about 5,000 per minute per microcurie per cubic centimeter, in the presence of a background of about 550 counts per minute, was observed. A sharp bend (4 cm. radius) in the light pipe had no effect on the count rate. There is evidence that some of the counts are due to gamma rays originating at some distance from the crystal, a situation that is undesirable for certain purposes. At this writing the work is in an early stage. Investigation of the response of the system to P32 and to I126 will be undertaken shortly. The system will be applied in experiments designed to measure myocardial blood flow and cardiac output and to locate the site of gastrointestinal bleeding." @default.
