The breakdown process, accompanied by loss of low-density clay fractions in weathered materials is considered as responsible for the observed patterns in relative enrichment of thorium and uranium along the migration paths of radionuclides. The characteristic features of these patterns provide clues as to the time and distance scales associated with processes of weathering and erosion. It is also possible to determine approximate locations of concentrations of accessory minerals. In this context, we advance the hypothesis that large underwater monazite deposits may be present along the offshore sand banks, in the coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
