- W2116719448 abstract "Reconstruction of the mandible is now a commonly performed and generally reliable procedure with good patient outcome. There are many alternatives for this reconstruction and the choice of an optimal flap will be dictated by patient factors, extent of tumor, and known donor site morbidity, as well as by the expertise and experience of the surgeon. Multiple donor sites, including the fibula, scapula, radial forearm, and iliac crest, have been used for reconstruction of the mandible to provide bone replacement and soft tissue coverage. The fibula free flap is the most commonly used osseous flap in repair of the mandible after cancer ablation. Although the iliac crest and radius have their proponents, they have for the most part been relegated to a position of secondary choice in those patients for whom the fibula, for whatever reason, is not a reconstructive option. If soft tissue bulk is required, then the iliac crest may be a better option; if extensive skin cover is required, as in, for example, through-and-through defects, then the scapula may be a logical choice. The radial forearm flap has many desirable characteristics, but it may be associated with an unacceptably high rate of fracture in the residual radius." @default.
