- W2116719473 abstract "Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Washington, D.C. based Foundation on Economic Trends, the best selling author of works like The End of Work, The Biotech Century, and The Age of Access, has written a compelling book that describes why it is so urgent for mankind to develop new alternatives to fossil fuels for our energy sources. In his soon to be published The Hydrogen Economy, Rifkin suggests that days of cheap oil are soon to be over and that continued reliance on other conventional energy resources including coal and natural gas will not afford much relief. In a well researched treatise, he skillfully employs history, science, and geopolitics to make the case that hydrogen from renewable energy sources offers the best hope to achieve a sustainable society characterized by social equity. Several factors are cited by Rifkin in his arguments for change: ~1! leading petroleum geologists are predicting that peak world oil production will occur within two decades with natural gas production peaking shortly thereafter, leading to shortages and high prices; ~2! increased reliance on oil from the Middle East will coincide with a rise in tensions and terrorist activities as the Islamic fundamentalist movement gains strength, attempting to wrest power from autocratic rulers and redistribute wealth to the masses; ~3! while some people attempt to promote coal as an alternative, increasingly evident negative climate effects will be felt as the global population clamors for change. Current interest in supplying electricity from distributed generation sources together with the interest in fuel cell power for both stationary and mobile use signals the dawn of the hydrogen era. Hydrogen, the cleanest of fuels, produced from renewable energy sources has the potential to ‘‘democratize’’ energy availability for the masses. Rifkin argues that hydrogen produced close to the point of use will power fuel cells. Similar to the development of the world-wide-web, we can expect to see a hydrogen energy web, with individual fuel cells connected through transmission networks supplying electricity to not only the host site but others on the web when excess power is produced. Like the world-wide-web, the hydrogen energy web will facilitate the redistribution of knowledge and energy and permit equal opportunity without regard to geography." @default.
