- W2116736682 abstract "The degradation of the natural resource base that derives from unsustainable farm practices is of major concern in Australia. Confronted with mounting evidence of the extent of this degradation, governments have employed a variety of policy instruments to induce change amongst the fanning community. However, there remains a widely-held view that the rate of adoption of current recommended practices (CRP) falls well short of that required to avert disaster and additional measures are required to accelerate change. Clearly, understanding the processes that lead farmers to adopt CRP is critical to the success of a wide range of policy interventions. Whilst some useful work has already been undertaken in this area, a deficiency resides in the failure to acknowledge the important role of specific ‘within-person' factors, particularly personality. This article reports the results of a study to measure within-person variables and thereby enable policy makers to focus on those attributes most susceptible to change. Data were collected from over 500 farmers in the NSW Murray catchment and were then used to isolate the farmers’ personality, objectives and attitudes to different practices. The results indicate that a farmer's openness and agreeableness are significant factors determining the extent to which best practice is employed in the management of remnant bush and revegetation. This information can assist practitioners in three main ways. Firstly, implementation staff might be able to use these results to assist in recognising those individuals most likely to switch to or expand CRP. Secondly, the information might be used to frame promotional material to deliver greatest impact. Thirdly, by isolating personality traits in the data, policy interventions that exploit attitudinal influences can be recommended with greater certainty." @default.
