- W2116745168 abstract "Abstract Recent experiments have documented the precise motor synergies used to hold the eye during fixation in various directions and to move it saccadically from one fixation position to the next. These data imply that commands for holding the eye are constrained to two degrees of freedom (Listing's law) whereas the control signals for a particular movement belong to a threedimensional subset whose precise composition depends on where in the oculomotor range the movement is made. As visual signals contain data only about target location in two dimensions, the third component in the signals controlling eye rotations has to be generated at some stage in the chain of neural signal processing. Two models, proposing different sites where this crucial component for implementing Listing's law is generated, are discussed. To understand the way saccades are coded at the level of the interface between the visual and the motor systems, it is necessary to know how the location of an active area in a topographically organized neural map can generate goal-directed movements. A model of distributed coding in the superior colliculus, which allows an interpretation of several characteristic sensori-motor properties of collicular movement-related neurons, is discussed. Possible consequences of the two models for the implementation of Listing's law for neural coding in the superior colliculus are briefly mentioned." @default.
